After more than 30 years as a staple in Foley, Tanger Outlets is undergoing a massive transformation. The iconic shopping destination, situated along Alabama State Route 59, is moving beyond retail to become a premier social and dining hub.

A New Dining Destination

Tanger Outlets announced this week that Shake Shack will headline a brand-new 20,000-square-foot dining district. This expansion is a key component of a larger modernization effort covering the center’s 500,000-square-foot property. The development aims to create a vibrant day-to-night environment, featuring expanded patios, walkable gathering spaces, and outdoor areas designed to keep visitors at the mall longer.

Tanger officials expect the district to eventually host up to eight distinct restaurant concepts. "Across our portfolio, we have been very intentional about introducing fresh, elevated food, beverage and entertainment concepts that create an immersive, repeat-visit environment for our guests," said Justin Stein, executive vice president and chief revenue officer at Tanger.

Expanding the Alabama Footprint

This will be the third Alabama location for the internationally renowned burger brand, which originated as a New York City hot dog stand in 2001. Currently, the only operational Shake Shack in the state is located at The Summit in Birmingham, though another location is planned for the Shoppes at District 31 in Alabaster.

According to the center, leadership is actively recruiting additional "experience-driven" restaurants to round out the new district.

Building Momentum in Foley

The announcement follows a series of high-profile wins for the Foley outlet center. In June, the location made headlines by landing Alabama’s only Toys “R” Us outlet. That store brought the legendary brand back to coastal Alabama for the first time in over eight years, cementing the center's status as a top regional attraction.

"The strategy is evident in the approach we’ve taken to renovate and remerchandise Tanger Foley, where we’re curating an optimal mix of in-demand retail and dining brands that will reinvent the on-site experience for the center’s tourist and local audiences," Stein added.
