Skull found in Birmingham road identified as 68-year-old man missing for 2 years

Skeletal remains discovered in a Birmingham neighborhood earlier this year have finally been identified. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed on Tuesday that the remains belong to 68-year-old Jesse Strong, a transient formerly of Birmingham.
The Investigation
According to Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates, Strong had been missing from the West End area since approximately 2024. Notably, no formal missing persons report had ever been filed with law enforcement.
The discovery occurred just before noon on Wednesday, April 22, when a local resident alerted Birmingham police after spotting a skull in the 200 block of 6th Avenue North. The skull was found resting near a curb adjacent to an overgrown lot, and investigators discovered two additional human bones in the resident's nearby yard. At the time, authorities suggested that stray dogs in the area likely transported the remains to those locations.
Search Efforts
Birmingham police utilized a cadaver dog from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office to conduct an extensive search of the surrounding area, which is filled with vacant lots and abandoned homes. While initial sweeps did not immediately reveal a point of origin, further efforts on April 24 led to the discovery of additional skeletal remains inside an abandoned duplex at 125 6th Ave. North. Testing confirmed that all recovered remains originated from the same individual.
DNA testing finalized on Monday, Aug. 3, officially confirmed the identity of the remains as Jesse Strong. The Birmingham police investigation into the matter remains ongoing, according to reports provided to 205focus.com.
