Weekend severe storms possible in Alabama: Here’s when and where

While rain is expected to fall on and off across the entire state beginning later today and continuing through the weekend, Saturday stands out as the primary day of concern. The National Weather Service has issued a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather covering parts of North Alabama, including Huntsville. A Level 1 risk, which indicates the potential for isolated severe storms, extends across the remainder of North Alabama and a significant portion of Central Alabama.

Meteorologists are tracking two possible rounds of storms for Saturday. While the first wave could arrive during the early morning, the afternoon and evening hours pose the highest risk for severe activity as a cold front moves through. The strongest storms may produce wind gusts up to 60 mph, capable of downing trees and power lines, though current projections do not anticipate tornadoes.

Rainfall and Weekend Forecast

Although the southern part of the state is not currently included in the severe risk zone, residents there should still prepare for significant moisture. The cold front is expected to stall over South Alabama, likely leading to cooler temperatures and higher rainfall accumulation for that region. Forecasters are calling for 2 to 3 inches of rain in the southeastern corner of the state through 7 p.m. Sunday, with other regions seeing totals ranging from a tenth of an inch in the northwest to 1.5 inches elsewhere.
