Trump endorsement carries John Wahl to Alabama GOP nomination for lieutenant governor
The former ALGOP chairman faces Democrat Phillip Ensler of Montgomery in the general election.
Following a high-stakes campaign backed by a pivotal endorsement from Donald Trump, former Alabama Republican Party chairman John Wahl officially clinched the GOP nomination for lieutenant governor on Tuesday.
Wahl, who steered the Alabama Republican Party for five years, successfully navigated a contentious primary cycle, ultimately defeating Secretary of State Wes Allen in a race that intensified as both candidates championed conservative platforms. The matchup became notably heated as the candidates vied for the base's support.
The Associated Press officially called the race for Wahl at 9:30 p.m. With all 67 counties reporting final results, Wahl secured 57% of the vote (175,724 ballots), while Allen finished with 43% (132,625 ballots). Voter turnout for the runoff reached 10.7%, a decrease from the 23% seen in the May 19 primary.
A Conservative Mandate
Expressing his gratitude for the win, Wahl framed the outcome as a rebuke of the political establishment. "I think the people of Alabama sent a clear message," Wahl said. "They’re tired of politics as usual. They’re tired of the career politicians selling us out. And they want a conservative outsider who’s going to fight for them, defend their values and put the people of Alabama first."
Wahl noted his status as a newcomer to elected office, adding, "The farm boy from north Alabama who’s never run for office before going not just winning, but being the top vote getter in the entire state, that doesn’t happen every day. And it’s a special feeling for me."
Wahl, a butterfly farmer and business owner who was elected state party chairman in 2021, saw his candidacy boosted by a direct nod from Donald Trump in January. Trump praised Wahl’s contributions, stating, "John has been with us from the very beginning, and has been key to our many Republican Victories in the Great State of Alabama."
Policy Positions and the Path Ahead
Throughout his campaign, Wahl emphasized economic relief, specifically advocating for the elimination of the state’s 2% sales tax on food to assist families and senior citizens. Regarding the office of lieutenant governor, which presides over the state Senate, Wahl argued that the role holds significant potential for policy influence.
His involvement in conservative causes is well-documented; as head of the Alabama Public Library Service board, Wahl championed efforts to restrict access to books containing transgender themes in children's library sections.
The race saw significant friction, including a $20,000 legal challenge funded by Allen’s campaign regarding Wahl's residency requirements—an effort that was ultimately rejected by the GOP steering committee.
Wes Allen, who has served as probate judge and a state representative prior to his tenure as Secretary of State, reflected on his campaign efforts following the loss. "I have listened to Alabamians, responded to their concerns and taken in their ideas for making the state the best it can be for our children and grandchildren," Allen stated. He confirmed he will continue his duties as the 54th Secretary of State through January 2027.
Wahl now advances to the November 3 general election, where he will face Democratic nominee Phillip Ensler, a state representative from Montgomery and executive director of the Jewish Federation of Central Alabama. The victor in November will succeed current Lieutenant Governor Will Ainsworth.
