A tragic afternoon collision on Birmingham’s east side has left one person dead and two others hospitalized.

The two-vehicle wreck occurred at 3 p.m. Thursday in the 6300 block of First Avenue North. Emergency crews from Birmingham police, Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene to provide aid.

Investigation and Injuries

Birmingham Police Officer De’Rell Freeman confirmed that a man inside one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman traveling in the same vehicle was transported to a local hospital; authorities are currently working to determine if she was ejected from the car during the impact or managed to exit on her own.

The occupant of the second vehicle had to be extricated by rescue crews before being taken to the hospital for treatment. Additionally, a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy suffered a hand injury while assisting the victims at the scene. Officer Freeman clarified that the incident was not related to a police pursuit.
