54-year-old man shot by Cullman County deputies now charged with attempted murder

A 54-year-old man is facing a string of serious charges, including attempted murder, after a tense standoff with Cullman County deputies during a Thursday morning search warrant. According to reports from 205focus.com, the suspect was wounded during the encounter but is expected to recover.
The Incident
The incident unfolded shortly before 7:15 a.m. when the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team (SRT) arrived at 960 Alabama Highway 91 in the Bremen community. The team, clearly marked and uniformed, arrived in a van to serve a search warrant. Authorities report that the suspect, identified by District Attorney Champ Crocker as John Johnsey, opened fire on the officers upon their arrival. Deputies returned fire, striking Johnsey.
Legal Outcome
Following a review of the evidence, District Attorney Champ Crocker stated that the use of deadly force by deputies was justified, noting that the officers believed Johnsey’s actions created an immediate threat to their safety and the safety of others. While Johnsey is currently receiving care for non-life-threatening injuries, he now faces a significant legal battle.
The District Attorney's office has approved warrants against Johnsey for attempted murder, second-degree theft of property, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, and being a person forbidden to possess a firearm. Johnsey is currently being held as he awaits an Aniah’s Law hearing.
