The Alabama summer heat is set to intensify today, with a prolonged period of above-average temperatures in the forecast.
The National Weather Service predicts high temperatures reaching the mid-to-upper 90s on Saturday across the state, driven by an area of high pressure dominating the weather pattern.
Humidity will be particularly high near the coast, with a heat advisory in effect for Mobile and Baldwin counties. Expect these heat advisories to extend to more areas of the state on Sunday and into next week, as daily high temperatures remain in the mid-to-upper 90s, accompanied by increasing humidity levels.
This combination will push the heat index, or "feels like" temperature, as high as 109 degrees in parts of south Alabama and up to 105 degrees in northern regions.
By Sunday, more of the state will experience these elevated humidity levels. Here are the forecasted air temperatures for tomorrow (not accounting for the heat index):
As humidity rises, so do Alabama's chances for much-needed rain and thunderstorms. South Alabama is the most likely area to see rain today and Sunday, with higher chances for afternoon showers and storms moving northward on Monday and Tuesday.
The heat is expected to ease slightly by Wednesday and Thursday, according to the weather service, with continued chances for rain and storms.
Highs are forecast to peak in the low to mid-90s instead of the upper 90s for south and central Alabama on Wednesday and across the entire state by Thursday.
