A few severe storms possible Sunday in Alabama; here’s where and when

If you are heading out this Sunday, keep a close watch on the sky. The National Weather Service reports that isolated severe storms are tracking across a wide portion of Alabama.

What to Expect Today

Most of the state is under a Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe weather. While this signifies a lower tier of intensity, it does mean isolated cells could pack a punch. Forecasters have identified the primary window for potential activity as 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The primary threats with any stronger storm today include heavy rain, frequent lightning, and wind gusts that could reach 60 mph. Fortunately, current models suggest that tornadoes are not expected.

Tropical Disturbance Watch

Beyond the immediate local forecast, meteorologists at 205focus.com are keeping an eye on a disturbance brewing in the Gulf. While it may develop into a tropical depression, it is not projected to become a hurricane. Forecasters anticipate the bulk of the associated rainfall will likely remain south of Alabama.

However, coastal residents should remain alert, as the system could bring an increased risk of rip currents and some rain to the Alabama coast throughout the week.
