Airline cancels flight when child refuses to sit down

A routine flight turned into an unexpected grounding on Thursday when a young child refused to buckle up, forcing a Porter Airlines aircraft to return to the terminal. As reported by 205focus.com, the situation escalated after the plane had already departed the gate and was making its way toward the runway.

Safety Protocols Lead to Cancellation

According to a statement provided to PEOPLE, flight crews identified a toddler standing in their seat rather than remaining buckled in. Despite concerted efforts from both the accompanying parent and the flight crew to resolve the issue, the child would not secure their seatbelt.

"The aircraft could not takeoff in this unsafe condition, so the crew elected to return to the terminal and have the passengers disembark," a Porter Airlines spokesperson explained.

Logistical Complications

The delay proved costly in more ways than one. The process of returning to the gate, removing the family and their luggage, and handling the necessary administrative tasks such as refiling flight plans took significant time. Ultimately, the runway closed at 12:30 a.m., resulting in the flight's total cancellation.

Porter Airlines has since issued an apology to the other passengers affected by the disruption. While the family involved has not been publicly identified, the airline confirmed that passengers were able to depart on a flight the following day, Friday, Aug. 7.
