Alabama baseball gets shut out by Oklahoma in College World Series opener

For the first time throughout this NCAA tournament run, Alabama baseball finds itself in a must-win situation. The Crimson Tide opened its College World Series appearance with a difficult 9-0 loss to Oklahoma on Saturday, forcing the team into the loser's bracket.

To reach the championship series, Alabama now faces a daunting climb, needing to string together four consecutive victories. Despite the setback, head coach Rob Vaughn remains focused on the team's ability to bounce back. "Tough one for us today, but, man, all these kids have done all year is respond," Vaughn said after the game. "When they got punched in the mouth they’ve responded, and we get an opportunity to do it on Monday against another darned good team."

Offensive Struggles Against the Sooners

Alabama entered the College World Series with the lowest team batting average among the field, and those struggles were on full display against Oklahoma starter Cord Rager. Rager stifled the Tide for seven innings, allowing only three hits and one hit by pitch while recording eight strikeouts. LJ Mercurius closed out the final two frames, keeping the shutout intact.

The Tide managed to generate some momentum in the fifth inning when John Lemm and Eric Hines notched back-to-back singles. However, a Brennan Holt double play and a groundout by Luke Vaughn quickly extinguished the threat. "Cord was good today, just really good," Vaughn noted. "We just really struggled getting on time with his heater... We just couldn’t quite get on time today."

Oklahoma Capitalizes Early

While Alabama struggled at the plate, the Sooners broke the game open early. Oklahoma tagged Alabama starter Tyler Fay for three hits in the opening frame, capped by a two-run double from Trey Gambill. A run-scoring double play in the third inning padded the lead, but the contest truly slipped away in the sixth.

Deiten LaChance provided the highlight of the day for the Sooners, launching a two-run homer to left field while battling through a painful ankle injury sustained earlier in the game. Oklahoma eventually pushed across four more runs in the eighth to pull away completely. Fay finished his outing allowing five earned runs over six innings, while the bullpen surrendered four additional runs in relief.

Following this defeat, Alabama shifts its focus to a Monday matchup against either Georgia or Texas. First pitch for the elimination game is set for 1 p.m. CT with coverage available on ESPN.
