Battling Predatory Towing and the Future of Downtown Birmingham's Design

Twice a month, Birmingham’s Design Review Committee (DRC) meets to evaluate proposals for alterations to buildings within the city’s historic and commercial revitalization districts. This column provides an overview of recent DRC activity, categorizing projects by type and location. In this edition, we recap items from the DRC meetings held on August 14 and July 14, 2024.

As outlined in the application process, the decisions made by the DRC are final. Applicants must execute their projects as approved, and any changes to the plans must be re-submitted to the committee for further approval.

This week, the DRC reviewed proposals focused on enhancing downtown, relocating Carrigan’s, and installing signage to protect visitors who park in local lots.
