Birmingham back-to-school rallies offer free school supplies

As the new academic year approaches, the city of Birmingham is stepping up to help local families prepare. City officials and community partners are teaming up to host a series of back-to-school rallies this Saturday, Aug. 1, providing free school supplies and family-friendly entertainment across several locations.

Main Event: Strong Start at the CrossPlex

The headline event, the Strong Start Birmingham Back to School Rally presented by Window World, kicks off at the Birmingham CrossPlex, located at 2332 Bessemer Road. Families can head over between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to enjoy a packed schedule of activities, including music from a live DJ, local food trucks, face painting, inflatables, and a game truck. Attendees can also grab samples from Coca-Cola and receive free haircuts courtesy of the Birmingham Barber and Style School.

This major initiative is supported by a host of sponsors, including the Birmingham Police Department, Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services, Crime Stoppers, Church of the Highlands, Coca-Cola United, Rising Star Baptist Church, and the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Neighborhood Rallies and Giveaways

In addition to the main rally at the CrossPlex, City Council members are sponsoring various neighborhood events on Saturday, Aug. 1, to ensure students have the tools they need to succeed:

• Bessie Estell Park (901 8th Street South): 10 a.m. to noon (for students at Epic, Avondale, and Glen Iris Elementary schools).
• Peace on the Block (1200 Tuscaloosa Avenue): 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Roosevelt City Recreation Center (5904 Higan Ave.): 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Maclin Park (2701 F.L. Shuttlesworth Drive): Noon to 6 p.m.
