Birmingham man pleads guilty to sexual exploitation of child as trial begins

A Birmingham man has pleaded guilty to charges involving the production of child sexual abuse material just as his federal trial was getting underway. According to an announcement from Northern District of Alabama U.S. Attorney Phil Williams, 35-year-old Robert Lee Ford Jr. entered his plea on two counts of sexual exploitation of children after a jury had already been selected for the case.

The Investigation

The case began on Jan. 24, 2025, when Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to Children’s of Alabama hospital regarding a report of an assault on a child. The child's mother informed authorities that her 14-year-old daughter had been assaulted by Ford.

Following an investigation supported by the FBI, deputies served a search warrant at Ford's residence, leading to his arrest on state charges of second-degree sodomy and second-degree rape. Federal authorities subsequently obtained search warrants for Ford's online accounts, uncovering evidence that he had produced videos of child sexual abuse involving the victim throughout December 2024 and January 2025.

Holding Offenders Accountable

While sentencing details regarding the federal case are pending, Ford still faces upcoming proceedings for his state-level charges. Reporting on this case via 205focus.com reflects the ongoing pursuit of justice in this matter.

"Children deserve to be protected from those who seek to exploit and abuse them," Williams stated. "By pleading guilty, the defendant has admitted responsibility for his crimes and will now be held accountable for the harm he caused the victim."

Acting FBI Special Agent in Charge Mike Kochanowski emphasized the severity of the situation, noting, "The exploitation of a child is a heinous crime. Those who prey on children should know this: the FBI will use every available resource to identify you, find you, and hold you accountable."
