Could Alabama football use 2-QB system during 2026 season? What Kalen DeBoer said

As the Alabama football program pushes through its ongoing quarterback battle, head coach Kalen DeBoer is keeping his cards close to the vest. While speaking at SEC Media Days in Tampa, DeBoer addressed the possibility of a two-quarterback system, though he admitted it is not his preferred path.

Searching for Stability

DeBoer made it clear he would prefer a single signal-caller to lead the offense rather than rotating players. "I think it’s best done when you have one guy taking the snaps consistently," DeBoer said. He emphasized that continuity helps with leadership and gives the entire team a clear sense of expectation, though he stopped short of declaring a multi-QB approach a guaranteed failure.

The Contenders: Mack vs. Russell

The competition currently centers on Austin Mack and Keelon Russell. Mack, a senior standing at 6-foot-6 and 232 pounds, enters the race with significant institutional knowledge. Having played for DeBoer since 2023 at Washington, Mack offers a level of familiarity that is hard to ignore. He saw action last season, recording 228 yards and two touchdowns, notably stepping in after Ty Simpson suffered an injury during the Rose Bowl.

Opposing him is the dynamic sophomore Keelon Russell. A former five-star prospect, Russell has already proven he belongs in the conversation after competing for the job as a true freshman last year. While Mack was hampered by a minor injury during A-Day, Russell impressed observers with a strong showing. Russell’s mobility could prove vital, especially with an offensive line that returns only one starter and faces the challenge of integrating several inexperienced players.

A Difficult Decision

DeBoer remains optimistic about the depth in his quarterback room, praising both candidates' talent and work ethic. "Both of them are more than capable," DeBoer noted during his media availability. "I think they’re high-level, elite quarterbacks. Fortunately we have them both in our program and it’s going to be a competition that’s going to lead to a tough decision."

The Crimson Tide will continue to evaluate both players as they prepare for the season opener. Alabama officially kicks off its 2026 campaign on September 5, when they face East Carolina at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
