Donald Trump claps back at Stephen A. Smith after Game 3 of NBA Finals

The tension between Donald Trump and ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith reached a boiling point following Monday night's Game 3 of the NBA Finals. With the eyes of the basketball world on the court, Trump became the first sitting president to attend an NBA Finals game, a move that prompted pointed criticism from Smith.

The Knicks' Streak Snapped

The San Antonio Spurs spoiled the night for New York, defeating the Knicks 115-111 and cutting the series lead to 2-1. Victor Wembanyama dominated the performance with 32 points, eight rebounds, and six assists, ending the Knicks' impressive 13-game winning streak. Prior to this loss—their first in 46 days—the Knicks had been on a historic run, having not dropped a game since an April 23 defeat to the Atlanta Hawks. The loss also denied New York a chance to push toward their first title since 1973.

Trump Fires Back

Leading up to the tip-off, Smith was adamant that Trump had no business attending, labeling the president as "selfish," "narcissistic," and "ridiculous." Smith went as far as to state, "If it causes the New York Knicks to lose tonight, I’m blaming him. I’m blaming the president of the United States! And damnit, I hope the GOP loses votes because of it if we lose tonight!"

Following the outcome, Trump did not hesitate to respond to the ESPN analyst's pre-game remarks. "I think he’s a nice guy," Trump told reporters Monday night. "But you need a certain aptitude to run for president. You need a high IQ. I don’t think Stephen has that. I don’t that he does actually."
