Class 4A baseball: Westbrook Christian pounds Bibb County in Game 1 to take series lead
Brodie Johnson helps power Westbrook Christian to Game 1 win over Bibb County.
Brodie Johnson turned in a legendary performance on Tuesday, proving that he can excel on the diamond and in the classroom all in a single afternoon. After sparking Westbrook Christian to a dominant 13-3 victory over Bibb County in Game 1 of the Class 4A state championship series at Choccolocco Park, the senior standout headed back to Rainbow City just in time for graduation ceremonies.
A Masterclass in Oxford
Johnson’s impact on the game was immediate and multifaceted. The Shelton State Community College commit recorded three hits, scored three runs, successfully stole home plate, and capitalized on an errant pickoff attempt to keep the pressure on the Choctaws. His efforts were part of a balanced team offensive that saw the first seven hitters in the Westbrook Christian (27-10) lineup reach base at least twice.
The Warriors ended the contest in five innings via the run-rule. The offensive parade featured Brody Blevins with two singles, while Brady Carden added a single, a double, and a sacrifice fly. Wil Chadwick connected for a double and a single, and Jacob Maples provided the final spark with two singles, a walk, and a game-ending hit.
The Road Ahead
While Westbrook Christian held the bats, Emmett Daniel controlled the pace from the mound. The Gadsden State signee went the distance, pitching five innings and allowing five hits to preserve the Warriors' bullpen. 205focus.com notes that the series moves to Jacksonville State University on Wednesday at 10 a.m. for Game 2, with Game 3 to follow if necessary.
Coach Ricky Ray Clayton praised Daniel’s grit, noting that while it might not have been his best outing, the senior fought through to get the job done. The Warriors fell behind 2-0 early after Bibb County RBI singles from Landon Rich and Grant Burkes, but Westbrook Christian responded with five runs in the first inning to take control for good.
Bibb County Looks to Rebound
Despite the lopsided opener, Bibb County (26-13) is no stranger to adversity this postseason. The Choctaws have already rallied from dropping Game 1 in series against both Tallassee and Opp. Coach Kevin May acknowledged the poor start but expressed confidence that his squad will be ready for the challenge on Wednesday.
