Gulf Shores star WR with ‘elite speed’ commits to West Virginia

Gulf Shores playmaker Carter Davis officially pledged his future to Rich Rodriguez and West Virginia on Monday afternoon, marking a significant recruiting win for the Mountaineers.

Davis cemented his status as the Dolphins' go-to offensive threat throughout the 2025 season. During his breakout campaign, he hauled in 45 receptions for 715 yards and nine touchdowns, while adding another 118 rushing yards and four scores on the ground.

Elite Speed

According to Gulf Shores coach Mark Hudspeth, it is the receiver's sheer velocity that sets him apart. "What everyone sees is his top end speed," Hudspeth said. "He is the fastest guy in Alabama in the 60-meter indoor. It’s hard to cover when you are that fast. He has elite speed and is a difference maker when you have a chance to get him a home run ball."

Davis was a highly sought-after prospect, fielding offers from national powerhouses including Alabama, LSU, Mississippi State, and Arkansas.

Why West Virginia?

Hudspeth noted that the Mountaineers' consistent effort made the difference in the recruitment process. "West Virginia has done a good job recruiting him," the coach explained. "Throughout the process, they’ve been with him longer than anyone. I think he felt most comfortable there with that staff. He likes coach Rich Rod (Rodriguez), and he sees himself fitting in nicely there."

While some programs evaluated Davis for a move to the defensive backfield, most schools recruited him primarily as an offensive weapon.

Busy Week on the Recruiting Trail

Davis is the second high-profile Gulf Coast senior to announce a commitment in as many days, joining Williamson linebacker Ellis McGaskin, who recently committed to Florida.

The Mobile area continues to see top talent finalize their college destinations. Recent commitments include Vigor’s Isaac McNeil (Auburn), St. Michael’s Gunner Rivers (N.C. State), Williamson’s Jaylen Scott (Oklahoma), Saraland’s Jamison Roberts (Oklahoma), McGill-Toolen’s Avrian Pauley (Alabama), and Daphne’s Christian Segar (South Alabama).
