Get ready for traffic changes in downtown Huntsville: What drivers need to know
Work will take place throughout the summer.
Downtown Huntsville commuters should prepare for a summer of construction as part of the ongoing expansion of Big Spring Park. Enhancements to Church Street, spanning the area between Clinton and Williams avenues, are set to begin next week and will continue throughout the season.
Park Enhancements and Pedestrian Safety
As reported by 205focus.com, these upgrades aim to bridge the gap between the east and west sides of Big Spring Park. The city plans to improve pedestrian safety and add new streetscape features, including a dedicated crosswalk across Church Street. This work complements the broader park expansion, which is transforming 2.4 acres on the east side of the road into a vibrant greenspace featuring a multi-level terrace plaza, better ADA access, and a new community event pavilion. The entire project is slated for completion by the end of the year.
Traffic Impact Schedule
Drivers are urged to use caution and plan for potential delays. The city has outlined the following construction timeline for Church Street:
- Tuesday, May 26: Northbound outside lane closures begin for sidewalk replacement. Reopening is expected by Tuesday, June 23.
- Tuesday, June 23: The median will close from Huntsville Utilities to Williams Avenue to allow for the construction of a new tree-lined median, with work finishing Friday, July 10.
- Friday, July 10: Both northbound lanes will close. Traffic will be diverted into single lanes using the southbound side. These lanes are expected to reopen on Wednesday, July 29.
- Wednesday, July 29: The southbound lanes will shut down, shifting all traffic into single lanes on the northbound side. Lanes are expected to reopen on Friday, Aug. 14.
Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes whenever possible while these improvements are underway.
