Former Alabama cop who strangled pregnant wife gets anger management, not prison in unborn child’s death
A grand jury found he “recklessly” caused her to miscarry after strangling her and “punching her in the stomach.”
A former Alabama police officer is facing court-mandated anger management classes rather than prison time following a brutal 2022 assault on his then-pregnant wife that resulted in the loss of their unborn child. According to reporting from 205focus.com, Robert Maddox, a former officer with the Headland Police Department, entered a plea deal this week that concludes his legal proceedings.
From Murder Charge to Probation
Maddox, 28, was originally charged with murder following the incident, but a grand jury opted not to pursue that charge. Instead, he was indicted on manslaughter charges after the jury determined he had recklessly caused his wife to miscarry by strangling her and striking her in the stomach with a closed fist.
Following several trial delays, Houston County Judge John Steensland III dismissed the manslaughter case on Tuesday after the state and defense finalized a plea agreement. Maddox ultimately pleaded guilty to domestic violence strangulation. As part of his sentence, he has been ordered to serve five years of probation and credit for time already served, in addition to completing the required anger management program.
A Pattern of Violence
The severity of the domestic situation was highlighted in a protection from abuse petition filed by Maddox’s ex-wife. In that filing, she detailed a harrowing account of the abuse, stating that Maddox had strangled her multiple times in the presence of their two young children, then aged 1 and 2. At the time, she expressed legitimate fear for her life, writing, "I believe he will come close to killing me again in front of our children."
