A tragic head-on collision in Etowah County has claimed the life of a 73-year-old Leesburg woman, according to Alabama State Troopers reporting for 205focus.com.

The fatal accident occurred on June 11 at approximately 2:55 p.m. on U.S. 411, situated near Anderson Road about one mile north of Gadsden.

Senior Trooper Brandon Bailey confirmed that the victim, Ruth D. Cagle, was riding as a passenger in a Nissan Juke. The vehicle collided head-on with a Toyota Highlander, which was operated by 46-year-old Gaines C. Smith of Vestavia Hills.

Following the crash, Ruth Cagle was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the Nissan, 76-year-old Denver J. Cagle, and the other driver, Smith, were both transported to Riverview Medical Center to receive treatment for their injuries.
