Huntsville drone company receives up to $820 million loan from Department of War
Loan will help expand domestic drone manufacturing.
Huntsville's footprint in the defense industry is growing significantly. PDW Holdings, Inc., the parent company of Performance Drone Works, has secured a conditional loan commitment of up to $820 million from the Department of War’s Office of Strategic Capital (OSC).
Boosting Domestic Manufacturing
This substantial financial backing is earmarked for the expansion of domestic manufacturing capabilities. By scaling up the production of components and technologies for next-generation robotics, autonomous systems, and drones, the initiative aims to reduce America's reliance on foreign-controlled supply chains.
The company operates a massive 90,000-square-foot facility in Huntsville known as Drone Factory 01. This site serves as a centralized hub where PDW integrates engineering, flight testing, production, and systems fulfillment to deliver mission-capable hardware at scale.
Leadership Perspective
"America’s ability to respond tomorrow depends on the industrial capacity we build today," said PDW CEO James Slider. He noted that the commitment supports the critical necessity of restoring domestic manufacturing prowess to provide reliable technology to those who defend the nation.
Matt Higgins, co-founder and executive chairman of PDW, highlighted the strategic importance of the move. "For more than a decade, the United States has been dependent on foreign technology and has lacked a domestic drone component ecosystem," Higgins stated. "This financing would allow us to build the components necessary for a thriving, sovereign dual-use drone industry."
A Rapid Evolution
The path to becoming a defense powerhouse has been a swift journey for the firm. PDW began with a small team of 12 employees at the Stovehouse entertainment venue on Governors Drive, originally focusing on drones for a racing league. Since launching operations at their new factory last year, the company has worked toward an ambitious goal to produce 60,000 drones a year, with plans to hire 500 employees to fuel that growth.
While this conditional commitment is a major milestone, PDW must still navigate customary requirements—including legal, financial, and technical due diligence—to reach the final financial close on the loan.
