If you’re a Walgreens shopper, there’s a good-news-bad-news situation: The company is closing stores but not nearly as many as initially announced.
The company, which owns 8,500 locations nationwide, began closures in 2025, according to an article by Inc.
“The pharmacy giant is continuing a multiyear downsizing effort in 2026, closing stores across at least a dozen states as it works to shrink its footprint to a more profitable base,” the article said.
The closures include a distribution center in Houston, the article said.
“In 2025, Walgreens went private,” the article said. “Its new owners have scaled back the pace of closures. Now, Walgreens expects to shutter fewer than 100 stores in 2026, down from earlier internal projections that had put the number closer to 700.”
