Huntsville’s HudsonAlpha awarded $160 million grant to transform rural economies
Program seeks to develop underutilized farmland to create jobs, sustainable industries.

Huntsville’s HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology is set to play a pivotal role in revitalizing rural economies across Alabama and Tennessee. The institute has secured an initial $15 million in funding, with the potential to reach $160 million over the next decade as part of the prestigious U.S. National Science Foundation Regional Innovation Engines program.
A Catalyst for Rural Innovation
This ambitious initiative, known as the NSF BRIDGES Engine, aims to transform underutilized farmland into a hub for biobased innovation. By leveraging advanced science and technology, the project focuses on creating sustainable industries, new job opportunities, and stronger agricultural markets for the region.
The project is backed by a powerhouse collaboration including the University of Tennessee, Auburn University, AGgrow Tech LLC, and Volkswagen Group of America.
Elite Selection
Out of 300 applicants nationwide, the BRIDGES Engine was one of just 12 teams selected to receive funding. HudsonAlpha President Neil Lamb expressed pride in the achievement, noting that the initiative serves as a model for how investment in use-inspired technology can drive purpose and prosperity.
The program aims to address the needs of rural communities in the Southeast by diversifying economies and improving access to quality jobs. Central to this strategy is the cultivation of perennial grasses like switchgrass and Miscanthus, which improve soil health and provide sustainable feedstocks for manufacturing.
BRIDGES CEO Sam Jackson highlighted that the effort is about more than just research. By uniting 85 partners, the team intends to establish new markets for farmers and provide essential skills training to the rural workforce.

By combining HudsonAlpha’s genomic expertise with on-the-ground industrial applications, the BRIDGES Engine is poised to serve as a national model for rural economic transformation.
