Legendary filmmaker teams up with AI company: ‘We have to be open to how it can evolve’

Legendary director Martin Scorsese is embracing the future of filmmaking by partnering with the artificial intelligence company Black Forest Labs. Serving in an advisory role, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker is looking to bridge the gap between cutting-edge technology and the traditional art of storytelling.

Bridging the Creative Gap

For over seven decades, Scorsese has been manually crafting his own storyboards. He notes that the perennial challenge for directors is conveying a specific vision from their mind to the cast and crew. In a statement reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Scorsese emphasized his interest in how technology can push creative boundaries. He pointed out that cinema remains a relatively young medium, stating, "We have to be open to how it can evolve."

Efficiency Meets Artistry

Scorsese is no stranger to integrating new tech into his workflow, having previously utilized 3D for Hugo and de-aging processes for The Irishman. He believes this new AI tool will revolutionize pre-production by allowing him to visualize and share concepts with his production designers, art directors, and cinematographers more efficiently.

"I recently tested this out on a scene and the ability to visualize and immediately share the storyboard was creatively freeing," Scorsese explained. "During the pre-production process, time costs money, and this allowed us to move faster without sacrificing quality or craft."
