Hungry for Southern comfort food? A new dining option is eyeing a debut in Homewood, though the owner is currently navigating a final procedural step before the doors can swing open.

Big John Buffet Prepares for Launch

John Yoon, the owner of Big John Buffet, shared with 205focus.com that the eatery is prepared to serve guests, but the timeline currently hinges on a health inspection from the Jefferson County Health Department. This inspection is the final requirement needed to secure a necessary food permit.

"I’m ready to open but they haven’t given a date yet when they want to come out," Yoon stated, adding that he is waiting for the department to email him the scheduled date for the visit. Yoon noted that he submitted his application for the food permit more than two weeks ago.

What to Expect on the Menu

Located at 162 Oxmoor Road in Homewood, the restaurant is now targeting a June opening. The path to the launch has seen some adjustments; the project was initially slated for an April debut, but Yoon explained that delays involving construction and fire inspections pushed the timeline back. Fortunately, those hurdles have now been cleared.

Once open, Big John Buffet plans to focus on classic Southern staples. Diners can look forward to a spread that includes fried chicken, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, sweet potato yams, and several other comfort food favorites.
