A morning shooting at a Birmingham motel has left one person dead. The incident occurred shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Monday at the Anchor Motel, located in the 8400 block of First Avenue North.

A morning shooting at a Birmingham motel has left one person dead.

The incident occurred shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Monday at the Anchor Motel, located in the 8400 block of First Avenue North.

When East Precinct officers arrived at the scene, they found an adult male victim unresponsive in the parking lot, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. A bystander was attempting CPR on the man.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service transported the victim to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

According to Sgt. LaQuitta Wade, the victim had been involved in a physical altercation with an unidentified suspect who then fired the fatal shots and fled the scene in a vehicle.

This marks Birmingham’s 99th homicide of the year. Of those, eight have been ruled justifiable and are not classified as criminal.

In total, Jefferson County has recorded 124 homicides, including the 99 in Birmingham.
