The reward for information regarding the tragic shooting death of an 18-year-old in Talladega has officially doubled. Community leaders are stepping up to help bring justice to the family of a local student-athlete whose life was cut short.

A Community in Mourning

Jy’Kavien Wright was killed just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday, May 31. Law enforcement officers responded to the 600 block of McAlpine Street, where they discovered Wright deceased on the sidewalk following a single-gunshot wound to the head. The tragedy unfolded only two weeks after Wright celebrated his graduation from Talladega High School.

Honoring a Leader

Wright was a standout presence at his school, serving as captain of the basketball team and holding ambitions to play at the community college level. Talladega City Schools Superintendent Dr. Quentin Lee expressed the deep sorrow felt by the district, stating, “We are devastated and angry over the tragic loss of this well-respected young man who represented his school so well.” Lee added, “He was deeply loved by everyone who knew him, and my heart breaks for his family, friends, classmates, and school staff. He didn’t deserve this.”

Reward Increased

To help move the investigation forward, Talladega City Councilman Steve Dickerson of Ward 1 announced on Monday that he is contributing $1,000 of his own personal funds to the effort. This addition brings the total reward to $2,000, building on the initial $1,000 offer from Crime Stoppers for information leading to an arrest.
