Rock the South organizers explain cancellation, new date: ‘Enough time to fix the damage’
Organizers ordered a water truck the week before because it was too dusty — then 7 inches fell in 24 hours.
After an unprecedented deluge forced a schedule shift, Rock the South organizers have officially moved the massive music festival in Decatur to October 1-4. The decision comes after a staggering seven inches of rain fell in just 24 hours at the Fields at Decatur off Alabama 24, rendering the site too saturated to safely host the massive crowds.
Weather Woes and Safety First
Shane Quick of Peachtree Entertainment, which owns the 150-acre site, emphasized that the team was actually ahead of schedule and prepared for a successful event. In fact, crews had ordered a water truck just one week prior to combat dusty conditions. However, the extreme rainfall left the venue in an unusable state.
“We do over 20 festivals every single summer,” Quick explained. “Everything was ready to go. There’s just no way to prepare for seven inches of rain in 24 hours.” Quick added that moving forward under the current conditions would have been unsafe for fans, noting that the goal remains to deliver the value and experience ticket holders expect.
What to Expect in October
The rescheduled dates promise a cooler atmosphere for attendees, with the added benefit of avoiding local college football conflicts, as both Alabama and Auburn are scheduled for away games that weekend. The festival is set to return with its full headlining roster intact: Zach Top will kick things off on Thursday, October 1, followed by Jason Aldean on Friday, October 2, and Riley Green on Sunday, October 4. The event will now span four full days, with Alabama native Jessie Murph headlining the Saturday, October 3 slot at no additional cost.
Ticket and Hotel Information
Organizers are working to make the transition as smooth as possible. Current tickets and camping packages remain valid for the new October dates. Those who cannot attend the rescheduled event should keep an eye on their email for further communication next week. Official updates will continue to be posted at rockthesouth.com.
For weekend pass holders who find themselves unable to attend the full, four-day schedule, the team is offering individual support via email at info@rockthesouth.com. Meanwhile, fans with hotel reservations are encouraged to contact their hotels directly regarding refund policies, especially since nearly all of Decatur’s 2,000 hotel rooms had been booked for the original event dates.
