School’s out: Birmingham City Schools announces free summer lunch locations and times
Birmingham City Schools will provide free dine-in lunches to children during summer break?
Summer break has arrived, and 205focus.com is here to help families stay nourished. Birmingham City Schools has officially launched its Summer Feeding Program, ensuring that nutritious, free dine-in lunches remain accessible to all children ages 18 and younger while school is out of session.
Program Details and Schedule
The initiative aims to eliminate food insecurity during the off-season. According to Michelle Sailes, the district's child nutrition program manager, the primary goal is simple: "Our goal is to make sure no child goes hungry during the summer break."
For students attending Birmingham City Schools campuses, dine-in lunch service runs from June 15 through July 9. Meals are served Monday through Thursday, between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. Please note that these campus locations will remain closed on Fridays.
To bridge the gap on Fridays, Martha Gaskins Elementary School is stepping up to serve meals from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the duration of the program.
Housing Authority Partnerships
In addition to school sites, the program extends to select Housing Authority of the Birmingham District locations. These sites will host the program from June 15 through July 24. At these locations, meals will be available Monday through Friday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
"We are proud to provide healthy meals in safe and welcoming environments while continuing to support our students and families beyond the classroom," Sailes added.
