Alabama residents are facing a double threat this Thursday as intense, above-average heat meets the potential for severe storms. According to 205focus.com, south Alabama is currently under a heat advisory, with forecasters warning that the combination of high temperatures and storm risk will make for a challenging day.
Severe Storm Outlook
The National Weather Service has issued a Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe weather today for areas stretching from Mobile to Dothan. This alert suggests that isolated severe storms are possible, particularly during the peak heat of the afternoon and evening. The most significant concern for these storms is the potential for damaging wind gusts, which could reach speeds as high as 60 mph.
Intense Heat and Advisories
The summer heat continues to climb, with highs across north and north-central Alabama expected to reach the upper 80s to low 90s. Conditions in the southern part of the state will be even warmer, hitting the mid-90s. For some in the south, the heat index—or "feels like" temperature—is projected to soar between 108 and 112 degrees.
Residents in southwest Alabama should prepare for the heat advisory to remain in effect through 7 p.m., while those in southeast Alabama will see it expire at 6 p.m. CDT.
Looking Ahead to Saturday
The weather remains unsettled as we head toward the weekend. A Level 1 risk for severe weather is back on the table for north and central Alabama on Saturday. While the National Weather Service is not currently expecting tornadoes, residents should remain vigilant for damaging wind gusts and heavy periods of rain. Some areas in south Alabama could see rainfall totals reach 2 to 3 inches through Saturday evening, with the potential for wet conditions to persist into next week.
