Shot clock rules, postseason changes among AHSAA basketball rules updates

The AHSAA Central Board has officially signed off on a series of critical basketball updates, setting the stage for a transformative season. From strict shot clock enforcement to revised postseason pathways, schools across the state are preparing for a new era of high school hoops.

Shot Clock Mandates

Following the April decision to implement a full shot clock for all classifications, the AHSAA has clarified expectations for the upcoming season. To host a varsity contest, schools must ensure their shot clocks are properly mounted. Failure to have a functional, mounted clock will result in a forfeit, while malfunctions during a game will be handled under specific officiating protocols.

"Basketball was a little different because we need to give our schools some information on what’s required for the shot clocks," AHSAA officials noted. "The shot clocks were passed, so we’re just making sure that they understand what they have to have."

Class 2A Postseason Realignment

Significant changes are hitting Class 2A, where tournament results now dictate both seeding and regional assignments. Sixteen of the 17 teams in the classification will advance to regionals, but where they land depends on their performance. The No. 1 and No. 3 seeds from an area will be funneled to one regional site, while the No. 2 and No. 4 seeds will head elsewhere. In the classification's lone five-team area, Area 1, an additional contest will be held after semifinals to determine the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds.

Class 6A Regional Shifts

As the state’s largest classification, Class 6A is seeing a shuffle in its regional destinations. Areas 5 and 6 are moving to the Northeast Regional at Jacksonville State, while Areas 7 and 8 are slated for the Northwest Regional at Wallace State. Affected teams include:

• AREA 5: Hoover, Prattville, Thompson, Tuscaloosa County
• AREA 6: Hewitt-Trussville, Oak Mountain, Spain Park, Vestavia Hills
• AREA 7: Buckhorn, Gadsden City, Grissom, Huntsville
• AREA 8: Bob Jones, Hazel Green, James Clemens, Sparkman

Championship Schedule Updates

The expansion to eight classifications—following the split between public and private schools—has necessitated a longer stay at Legacy Arena. The state semifinals and finals are scheduled to run from March 1 to March 6, with a final day of competition added for March 8. Classes 1A and 2A will lead the charge, with semifinals starting March 1 and title games concluding March 5. The final day on March 8 will feature championship games for Class Single-A and 4A.
