Why Alex Golesh called this summer ‘biggest in Auburn football history’
Alex Golesh brought 60 new players to the Plains and created individualized 12-week plans for each one, setting the stage for what could be the most critical offseason Auburn has ever faced.
Auburn football head coach Alex Golesh made his debut at the SEC spring meetings this week, marking his first appearance representing the Tigers on the conference stage. While the league discussions heavily favored the state of college football and the expanding College Football Playoff, Golesh kept his focus strictly on the immediate task of building a winning culture on the Plains.
Focusing on the Foundation
When asked about the future of the College Football Playoff, Golesh made it clear where his priorities lie. "I haven’t been in this league long enough to have an opinion on anything grander than Auburn football," he stated. "The College Football Playoff is literally the last thing I’ve thought about since taking the job. I’ve focused on the things we need to get done to be successful so that we’re eventually in that conversation."
Golesh faces a significant rebuilding effort at Auburn, a program that has not secured more than six wins in a single season since 2019 and has yet to make a College Football Playoff appearance. To shift the program's trajectory, the head coach has introduced an influx of talent, including 60 new players for the 2026 roster, 13 of whom followed him from his previous stint at South Florida.
The Most Important Summer
Coming off a spring practice period that saw the defense force four turnovers in the A-Day game, Golesh is now emphasizing a critical 12-week development window. He has personally overseen the implementation of individualized plans for every player, spanning strength, speed, nutrition, and sports medicine.
"We told the guys these are the things you’ve got 12 weeks to perfect," Golesh told 205focus.com. "I think the only message was that as a team, this is the biggest summer in Auburn football history, simply because it’s the next summer, and it’s the only one we have."
Establishing a New Identity
Golesh arrives at Auburn with a proven track record of turnaround success. During his time at South Florida, he revitalized a struggling program, moving them from a 4-29 record over three seasons to a 23-15 mark from 2023 to 2025. He believes that transformation begins with leadership and setting a standard that resonates throughout the roster.
"A college football team takes on the personality and identity of the head football coach," Golesh said. "If we finish year one with a clear understanding of what we are recruiting to, while establishing a firm identity offensively, defensively, and on special teams, we will have a real chance to be successful moving forward."
