Attendees enjoy live music and local food at the WhistleStop BBQ Festival in the MidCity District.

The smoky aroma of competition is returning to Huntsville as the WhistleStop BBQ Festival prepares for its fourth consecutive year at the MidCity District. A North Alabama tradition dating back to 2001, the festival will take over the festival lot along Old Monrovia Road on Friday, Oct. 16, and Saturday, Oct. 17.

Presented by the Apollo Coalition, the event promises a high-energy blend of elite amateur cooking and live entertainment. "The WhistleStop BBQ Festival is a fantastic example of the Apollo Coalition’s mission brought to life," said Joanna White, the coalition's managing director. "It’s where food and music combine to showcase the creativity of our community, whether in front of a grill or on the stage, all to support the work we do supporting the best and brightest in North Alabama."

Pitmasters will face off in an amateur contest sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society. More than 40 teams from across the Southeast are vying for the $2,000 Grand Champion cash prize. While the competition categories include ribs and chicken, the dessert category is uniquely open for public registration.

Festival-goers can get a taste of the action during the People’s Choice competitions. Chicken wing tastings begin Friday at 6 p.m., followed by pulled pork on Saturday at 2 p.m. These complimentary tastings are available while supplies last, and attendees can vote for their favorites via QR codes located throughout the grounds.

The festival stage will feature local talent throughout the weekend. On Friday, Nashville’s Travis Bowlin kicks things off at 5:30 p.m., followed by Milltowne at 7 p.m. and Huntsville favorites The Brooklines headlining at 9 p.m. Saturday’s schedule includes The Grasstronauts at 11:30 a.m., Josh Allison at 1 p.m., and Lana White & the Heights at 2:30 p.m., culminating in a closing set by viral sensation Buck’d Up at 4:30 p.m.

For families, the "Pigpen" offers a dedicated space for younger guests to enjoy the weekend. Lindsey Pattillo Keane, Executive Director of the MidCity Association, noted that the event "captures exactly what we hoped MidCity would become: a place where the whole community gathers. We’re proud to host this tradition in the district each fall."

Gates open at 4 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday. Advance tickets are priced at $10 for a single day or $20 for a weekend pass, with prices set to increase at the gate. Children 12 and under enter for free. Volunteers who sign up via the event website receive free entry and a commemorative t-shirt while supplies last.
