North Alabama Star Xavier Johnson Dominates FCS Leaderboards After Historic Stadium Debut

Xavier Johnson is quickly becoming the most dangerous playmaker in FCS football. The North Alabama wide receiver’s stellar start to the season reached new heights on Monday as he was named the United Athletic Conference (UAC) Freshman of the Week for the third time in just four games. This mark makes Johnson the first player in UNA history to capture the award three times within the opening month of a season.

The recognition follows a historic weekend for the Lions, who celebrated a 38-20 victory over Alcorn State in the inaugural game at Bank Independent Stadium—the program’s first true on-campus home. Johnson was the engine behind the offense, racking up a team-high 161 total yards and a touchdown to lead the Lions to victory.

The Memphis transfer showcased his elite versatility late in the second half. With five minutes remaining, Johnson broke loose for a massive 75-yard touchdown run, complementing his five catches for 86 yards. His consistency has been a hallmark of the Lions' early campaign; the redshirt freshman has eclipsed the 80-yard receiving mark in every game played this season.

Nationally, Johnson’s numbers are staggering. He currently leads all FCS players with 472 receiving yards on 24 catches. When looking at the entire Division I landscape, he ranks second overall, trailing only Oregon State’s Jesse Legree, who holds a slim four-yard lead with 476.

Now sitting at 2-2, North Alabama prepares to continue their home stand. The Lions will host Western Illinois this Saturday at Bank Independent Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m., and the action will be streamed live on ESPN+.
