Who is Behind Maurice Turner's Murder? SUV Caught on Camera Fleeing Scene

The search for the person or persons responsible for the fatal shooting of a 52-year-old man in his Birmingham apartment last month is still ongoing.

On Wednesday, Birmingham police released surveillance footage of an SUV fleeing the scene, hoping that someone might recognize the vehicle or provide information that could lead to an arrest.

Maurice Turner was found dead on the kitchen floor of his College Hills home on July 17.

North Precinct officers responded to a Shot Spotter alert just after 1:30 a.m. that Wednesday in the 800 block of Jasper Road, off Eighth Avenue West. The gunfire detection system recorded 10 rounds fired at the location.

When officers arrived, they did not find anything unusual or anyone in need of assistance. However, Birmingham Police and Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene and pronounced Turner dead at 2:03 a.m.

Turner, a father of two daughters and a son, was in his kitchen when the shooter or shooters fired through the back door of his first-floor apartment. The bullets penetrated the home, leaving holes in the front windows.

Turner’s roommate, a close friend, was in his room when he heard the gunfire.

“The roommate stated that he was inside his room and did not see anything,’’ Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said, “but he heard something that sounded like fireworks. He began to look around the apartment and discovered the victim lying unresponsive on the floor.”
