A suspect has been arrested in connection with the July shooting death of a man near a dice game in Birmingham. Edrick Hagler, 31, has been charged with the murder of 30-year-old Kameron Connell, according to an announcement from Birmingham police on Thursday.
Hagler was taken into custody by the department's Crime Reduction Teams and booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 12:41 p.m. He is being held without bond and also faces a failure to appear warrant on a previous attempted murder charge, as indicated by jail records.
The incident occurred on the evening of Monday, July 1. East Precinct officers responded to a report of a person shot in the parking lot of an apartment building in the 7700 block of First Avenue South just after 8 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found Connell unresponsive.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service transported Connell to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:37 p.m.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald noted that Connell was discovered near the location where people were gathered and playing dice. "We don’t know if the shooting is connected to the dice game," Fitzgerald said at the time. "However, we can point out when our officers observed the victim, he was in an area where dice is still on the ground."
