Birmingham Man Faces Capital Murder Charges in Deadly Shooting Spree That Left 2 Dead, 2 Injured

A 31-year-old Birmingham man has been charged in connection with a quadruple shooting that claimed the lives of two people, including his grandfather.

Kerry Jackson Jr. faces charges of capital murder for two or more victims, capital murder during a kidnapping, and two counts of attempted murder.

According to police, the kidnapping occurred when Jackson allegedly forced a female family member into a vehicle at gunpoint, compelling her to drive him from one shooting scene to another.

The victims include Laquitta Charisse Dunn, 49, and Anthony Jackson, 76, who was the suspect’s grandfather.

Authorities say the shootings were domestic-related, and those close to the suspect believe he may have "snapped."

Jackson was apprehended less than five hours after the shootings. Police credited family and community members with playing a significant role in his capture.

Jackson’s father and another woman remain in critical condition at UAB Hospital.

The violent spree began at 4:45 p.m. on Thursday when West Precinct officers were dispatched to a report of multiple people shot at a home on the 1600 block of Dennison Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers found Dunn, a beloved mother and grandmother, gravely wounded. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:20 p.m.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald stated that a man, later identified as Jackson’s father, was also injured in the Dennison Avenue shooting but had already left the scene when police arrived. He later showed up at Princeton Baptist Medical Center with life-threatening injuries and was transferred to UAB Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Further investigation led officers to another potential shooting site in the 1400 block of 17th Place S.W., near the first scene. There, police discovered Anthony Jackson and a woman in a basement den area. Jackson was pronounced dead at 5:50 p.m., while the woman was transported to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Jackson fled before police could arrive at the scene but was captured around 9:15 p.m. in Five Points West following an extensive search that included Jefferson County’s Star 1 helicopter.

The suspect’s grandfather and a family friend were shot at the 17th Place S.W. location, while his father and another family friend were shot at the Dennison Avenue residence.

“This was a shooter who knew every single person he shot,” Officer Fitzgerald said.

The tragic events have left the community in shock, with dozens of family members and friends gathering at the crime scenes, visibly distressed by the violence.

“This is senseless,” said Evelyn Koech, a friend and neighbor. “It’s not fair.”
