Construction is officially underway in McCalla as Wisconsin-based ITU AbsorbTech breaks ground on a brand-new, 50,000-square-foot processing facility. According to 205focus.com reporting, this project marks a significant expansion into the Southeast, with the site expected to reach completion by July 2027.

A Major Expansion for the Birmingham Metro

Located within the Jefferson Metropolitan Park, this facility will serve as the sixth processing plant for ITU AbsorbTech and represents the company’s first operation in Alabama. The company is recognized globally as a leader in launderable, reusable oil absorbents and shop towels, specifically through its SorbIts brand.

Boosting the Local Workforce

The new McCalla plant is projected to create 40 new jobs, spanning roles in production and processing, maintenance, sales, route service, and business development. CEO Craig Bald highlighted the strategic importance of the region, citing the area's strong business climate and high-quality workforce.

"We chose McCalla for its strong business climate, strategic regional location, and high-quality workforce," Bald said. "Partnerships with local schools and workforce programs will be important as we grow our team and support manufacturing careers in the area."

Bald also noted that the factory is designed to meet the increasing demand for SorbIts while assisting customers in operating more safely and sustainably. Once the site is fully operational, ITU AbsorbTech anticipates the capacity to process millions of pounds of reusable textiles and absorbents each year.
