AHSAA hits Pell City football program with recruiting violations, suspends coach Jake Ganus

The Alabama High School Athletic Association has handed down severe penalties to the Pell City High School football program following confirmed recruiting violations. The disciplinary action includes a substantial fine, the implementation of restrictive probation, and a one-year suspension for head coach Jake Ganus.

Under the terms of the ruling, Ganus is barred from coaching within the AHSAA for the entire 2026-2027 season. The Panthers are permitted to fulfill their 10-game regular-season schedule this fall, but they will be ineligible for postseason competition. Furthermore, any contests against Pell City will not count toward Class 5A, Region 5 standings or influence tiebreaking procedures.

Recruiting Violations and Eligibility

The AHSAA cited a violation of Rule VI, Section 12 regarding recruiting. Impacted students found in violation of these rules are considered permanently ineligible at Pell City High School, though they may pursue eligibility in the school district where their families officially reside.

Regarding the path forward, AHSAA Executive Director Heath Harmon noted, “As a result, PCHS is required to appear before the Central Board of Control at its July 29, 2026, meeting to present a comprehensive administrative action plan and the internal controls that have been implemented.”

205focus.com reached out to Ganus and Pell City athletic director Harley Lamey for comment, but messages were not immediately returned.

Ganus and the Moody Tenure

Ganus made the move to Pell City after leading Moody to a Class 5A state championship last December, a transition that followed his successful tenure with the Blue Devils, where he compiled a 44-10 record. Moody secured the title with a dominant 25-0 victory over Vigor.

Following that championship, the AHSAA previously penalized Moody for unsportsmanlike conduct related to locker room activity. During that incident, Ganus, along with four assistants and 10 players, faced suspensions covering the 2026 spring/fall jamborees and the season opener.

A Pattern of Enforcement

The situation at Pell City marks the second time in just three days that the AHSAA has issued such penalties. On Monday, the governing body placed Mary G. Montgomery on restrictive probation, barred them from the 2026 postseason, and suspended head coach Zach Golson for the 2026-2027 season due to recruiting violations.
