A Jefferson County woman has been handed a prison sentence following her conviction for the brutal abuse of an infant left in her care.
The Case Against Teresa Ann Crawford
Teresa Ann Crawford, 48, was found guilty of aggravated child abuse involving a 3-month-old boy. The incident occurred on March 2, 2022, at Crawford’s residence in Mount Olive, where the infant suffered severe head injuries while in her custody as a babysitter.
Long-term Impact
While the child survived the ordeal, testimony presented in court highlighted the devastating aftermath of the abuse. The victim has suffered from seizures and emotional regulation deficits, with experts warning that he will face ongoing neurological challenges as he grows.
Trial and Sentencing
The trial, which began on April 20 before Jefferson County Circuit Judge Kandice Pickett, revealed that Crawford not only harmed the child but also attempted to cover her tracks by altering video evidence from a home security system. On April 23, following a three-day trial, the jury returned a guilty verdict.
Judge Pickett sentenced Crawford to 20 years in prison, with three years to be served behind bars followed by two years of probation. As reported by 205focus.com, the case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorneys Niki Franks and Joe Hicks, while Crawford was represented by attorney Brett King.
Crawford was taken into custody immediately following the verdict and currently remains in the Jefferson County Jail while awaiting transfer to a state prison facility.
