75-year-old Alabama lawyer accused of poisoning husband violated bond by having fentanyl, judge rules
A judge has revoked the bond of 75-year-old Alabama attorney Sara Baker, who is accused of trying to fatally poison her husband.
A judge has officially revoked the bond for Sara Baker, a 75-year-old Alabama attorney facing serious allegations of attempting to fatally poison her husband.
Baker, a former prosecutor and one-time candidate for district attorney, was taken back into custody Tuesday in Mountain Brook. The arrest followed a warrant issued by Circuit Judge Gregory Williams, who was specially appointed to the case after local judges in Cullman County recused themselves.
The Allegations
Initially arrested in November 2025, Baker faces 11 felony charges, including conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, second-degree domestic violence, and multiple counts related to the possession and distribution of controlled substances.
Prosecutors contend that Baker plotted to kill her husband, James Doyle Baker, by spiking his food and drink with fentanyl on several dates in September 2025. Court documents outline a disturbing pattern of behavior, alleging that even after her release on bond, she attempted to interfere with her husband’s medical care and maintained contact with his caregivers.
Bond Violation Ruled
The situation escalated when authorities discovered a medicine bottle containing 12.2 grams of a purple-tinted powder—suspected to be fentanyl—at the victim's residence. Investigators allege that Baker had provided this bottle to her husband's caregivers under suspicious circumstances.
During a recent hearing, Baker's defense attorney, Robin Wolfe, presented testimony from James Doyle Baker, who claimed his wife had not had direct contact with him. However, Judge Williams remained unconvinced, ruling that Baker violated her bond conditions by transporting and storing fentanyl at her husband's residence.
“The continued release of the defendant poses a risk to public safety and no set of conditions will reasonably assure compliance with the court’s orders regarding the defendant’s bond,” Williams stated in his order. Baker is currently being held in a jail outside of Cullman County.
