Alabama baseball gets 1 win away from Super Regional with USC Upstate win
Alabama baseball can advance to the Super Regional round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday after beating USC Upstate.
Alabama baseball is standing on the doorstep of history. After a gritty 7-5 victory over USC Upstate in the Tuscaloosa Regional on Saturday, the Crimson Tide needs just one more win to host a Super Regional at Sewell-Thomas Stadium for the first time since 2006.
Keeping the Focus
Despite the high stakes, Crimson Tide head coach Rob Vaughn is keeping his squad grounded. "Job’s not done," Vaughn stated after the win. "You don’t get any kind of trophy for being 2-0 to start the regional and making a regional championship game. That’s not what it’s about. This team wants to do bigger and better things."
How it Happened
Zane Adams delivered a clutch performance on the mound for Alabama. Across six innings, Adams threw 103 pitches, allowing six hits and recording three strikeouts to put the Tide in a prime position.
The offense broke the game open in the third inning. After Justin Lebron singled and swiped second, Jason Torres doubled him home. Eric Hines then delivered the highlight of the day, blasting a 2-2 pitch over the fence to build a 4-0 cushion.
Alabama continued to respond whenever the Spartans showed signs of life. After Bryce Fowler tripled in the fourth, Lebron promptly singled him home. Later, a walk forced in another run, keeping the pressure on the Spartans throughout the middle innings.
A Nail-Biting Finish
USC Upstate mounted a serious rally in the seventh, highlighted by a Johnny Sweeney homer that narrowed the gap to 7-4. The pressure mounted in the ninth when the Spartans plated another run and moved the winning run to the plate. However, Alabama held firm, ending the game on a deep fly ball to the center field warning track.
Looking Ahead
The path to the Super Regional is clear but requires one final victory. USC Upstate must first face Oklahoma State in an elimination game on Sunday. The winner of that contest will advance to face Alabama with a spot in the Super Regionals on the line. Should the Crimson Tide fall in that matchup, the teams would be forced into a final showdown on Monday.
