Awesome burgers, super sandwiches are big deals at this Alabama restaurant
You’ll need two hands (and extra napkins) to handle the menu items at this welcoming joint in Birmingham.
In a season where we are all hunting for the best local value, finding a meal that satisfies both the hunger and the wallet is a top priority. 205focus.com is keeping an eye on the Birmingham food scene to highlight spots where you can enjoy a top-tier meal for $15 or less—tax and tip excluded. This week, we are shining a light on a downtown destination that delivers big flavor on a budget.
A Downtown Gem
Located at 2328 Second Ave. North, On a Bun is perfectly situated in the heart of Birmingham’s bustling Second Avenue food and entertainment corridor. Founded in summer 2025 by Crystal and Denise Peterson, the restaurant occupies the former home of the beloved Yo’ Mama’s, which has since moved to a larger space nearby. Crystal Peterson aimed to bring a fresh, evening-focused concept to the iconic spot, maintaining that same standard of home-cooked care in a welcoming, casual atmosphere.
Big Burgers and Bold Flavors
If you love a burger that demands two hands and a stack of napkins, you are in the right place. The menu features thick, juicy burgers and sandwiches crafted from turkey, catfish, chicken, or pork chops. They take the art of the topping seriously, blending traditional favorites with Southern flair like pimento cheese, slaw, barbecue sauce, collard greens, and mac and cheese. Check out the full menu online here.
The neighborhood-inspired naming convention is a highlight. Order the Eastside for a brioche bun piled with cheddar, lettuce, and Mama’s famous hot wing sauce, or try the 2nd Ave for a savory mix of pimento cheese and grilled onions. For the adventurous eater, the 4th Ave is a must: it arrives topped with mac and cheese and collard greens—essentially an entire Sunday dinner nestled on a buttery bun.
Value and Accessibility
Consistency is key at On a Bun, where burgers and sandwiches are priced at just $12. If you want to customize your meal, additional toppings like bacon, pimento cheese, or a fried egg are available for only $1-2. While the main courses are plenty filling, guests can round out their meal with sides like onion rings, slaw, or fries for an additional $4-$5.
The kitchen is also highly attentive to dietary needs. They offer dedicated gluten-free options, which is a massive win for those with celiac disease or wheat sensitivities. Even their onion rings can be prepared gluten-free—a rare find in the city.
