Birmingham activist arrested at city hall after showdown with police over jail deaths

A Birmingham activist was taken into custody at City Hall on Tuesday after a confrontation with police erupted during his attempt to meet with Mayor Randall Woodfin regarding back-to-back deaths at the city jail.

Escalation at City Hall

Eric Hall, a prominent Black Lives Matter leader, arrived at City Hall to demand answers following two separate jail deaths that occurred just three days apart. The protest began following Hall's appearance at a Birmingham City Council meeting earlier that day.

Tensions flared outside the mayor's office as Hall refused to leave without securing a meeting. Cell phone footage captured the scene, with Hall stating, “So, we have a mayor who can’t hear us. We have a mayor who doesn’t want to show up and listen to the public.” As officers moved in, Hall, shouting at the office doors, was tackled to the ground by police. While one officer was observed drawing a taser, it was not deployed. Hall remained vocal as he was handcuffed and escorted from the building, condemning both the administration and the treatment he received.

Investigation into Jail Deaths

Both recent jail fatalities, which occurred last Thursday and Sunday, have been identified by police as incidents involving self-harm. Authorities are currently conducting investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths in partnership with the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

A Longstanding Controversy

The Birmingham City Jail has faced scrutiny for years, struggling with aging infrastructure and persistent legal challenges regarding inmate care. An ongoing federal lawsuit highlights these concerns, alleging that inhumane conditions and medical neglect led to the 2022 death of a 49-year-old inmate.

State Rep. Juandalynn Givan, who shared video of Tuesday's arrest, argued that the city’s approach to public interaction is failing. “The people are demanding answers,” Givan said, noting that the facility requires a thorough assessment of staffing levels to address the systemic issues that have plagued the site for years. Despite efforts over the past two decades—including legal action to seek alternatives to the aging facility—a permanent solution, such as a regional jail or county partnership, has yet to be realized.

Mayor Woodfin’s office declined to provide a comment to 205focus.com regarding the incident.
