Bo Nix looking for the payoff after broken ankle ended his 2025 season

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix is back on the field, participating in mandatory minicamp as he continues his recovery from a broken ankle that sidelined him during the 2025 postseason. The injury kept the star signal-caller out of the AFC Championship Game, where the Broncos fell 10-7 to the New England Patriots.

A Familiar Pattern

Returning to team activities on Tuesday, Nix expressed a unique perspective on his injury history. Far from discouraged, the quarterback views his latest health challenge as a precursor to future success. As Nix told reporters, ankle injuries have historically preceded major milestones in his career, including a state title at Pinson Valley High School and a productive stint at Oregon.

“When I had an ankle injury in high school, we won the state championship,” Nix said. “When I had an ankle injury in college, we went and won a lot of games at Oregon. And now I expect it to be the same thing.”

Path to Recovery

Nix’s path to the NFL has been paved with resilience. After suffering an ankle injury during his final season at Auburn, he transferred to Oregon, where he went on to start 22 wins and rack up 8,101 passing yards and 74 touchdowns. His most recent setback occurred during Denver’s 33-30 overtime playoff victory against the Buffalo Bills on Jan. 17. Following that game, Nix underwent two surgeries—one in the immediate aftermath and a second in April.

Despite the medical procedures, the outlook is positive. Nix noted that doctors have cleared him, stating the ankle feels as good as new. While the Broncos managed his workload during Tuesday’s practice, the quarterback remains confident in his physical readiness, noting, “I could go full-go right now if they wanted me to.”

Looking Toward Training Camp

Head coach Sean Payton confirmed that the organization is taking a measured approach but remains optimistic about the trajectory of his star quarterback. “He will clearly be ready in time for training camp,” Payton said regarding Nix’s status for next month.

Addressing concerns from the fan base, Nix emphasized that his recovery is right on track. He plans to return to the field with the same speed and elusiveness that defined his play before the fracture. “It’s a broken bone, for crying out loud,” Nix said. “I feel really confident in myself and my training, and it’s not going to hinder me at all.”
