As the SEC spring meetings conclude in Destin, Florida, athletic programs across the conference are recalibrating for a new era of college athletics. Auburn athletic director John Cohen sat down with 205focus.com to weigh in on the latest legislative developments and the program's strategic approach to the upcoming season.

Navigating Legislative Shifts

Reflecting on the productive sessions in Destin, Cohen acknowledged that the collegiate landscape remains fluid. "I think there’s been progress made," Cohen said. "There’s obviously a lot to discuss. With the bill being dropped, I think we have to be productive. I think we have to be nimble, and I think there are going to be some tough decisions ahead of us."

The legislation Cohen referenced is the Protect College Sports Act. This proposed federal bill aims to overhaul key facets of the sport, including the prevention of a 'super league' model, the implementation of a 5% cap on agent registry fees, the allowance of pooled media rights, and strict rules preventing coaches from departing their teams before a season concludes.

Auburn’s Commitment to Competition

Financial transparency has become a hallmark of modern college football. Auburn’s NCAA report for fiscal year 2025 showed the program invested $59.4 million in football operations, landing the Tigers eighth among the 15 public schools in the SEC.

When pressed on the team's future financial trajectory, Cohen remained confident in Auburn's ability to maintain a seat at the table. "Yeah, I think we’re really competitive in that space," Cohen said. "I think we’re at a point to where especially on the offensive side of the football we’re excited about the future."

Investing in the 2026 Roster

The energy surrounding the program is palpable as the team enters its first season under head coach Alex Golesh. While official 2026 numbers are still forthcoming, the team enters the year with a roster investment ranked No. 18 nationally.

According to College Front Office, the Tigers committed $30.2 million to their current roster, with $16 million of that total dedicated specifically to players brought in via the transfer portal.
