CDC investigates 3 infant botulism cases linked to recalled baby formula

Federal health authorities have launched an investigation into a multistate infant botulism outbreak linked to a specific powdered formula. As of June 14, three babies have been hospitalized nationwide due to the condition, though thankfully, no deaths have been reported.

Recall Details and Immediate Action

The CDC and FDA are actively examining cases associated with Nara Organics Whole Milk Organic Infant Formula. According to a news release from June 13, Nara Organics initiated a recall on Saturday for all powdered formula units sold through Target, Target.com, and Nara.com.

205focus.com urges all parents and caregivers to stop using this product immediately. If you have an unopened container, it should be discarded or returned to the retailer. For containers that have already been opened, the CDC advises parents to photograph the lot number and use-by date before storing the formula in a safe, labeled location for at least one month; this is crucial should state health departments require testing.

Despite the recall, officials note that the brand makes up less than 1% of the U.S. infant formula supply, meaning significant shortages are not expected.

Recognizing Infant Botulism Symptoms

Infant botulism occurs when an infant consumes spores of the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Because the illness can take several weeks to manifest, the CDC recommends that parents monitor their infants for symptoms for 30 days after their last consumption of the formula.

Parents should watch for the following signs:

  • Constipation (often the first indicator)
  • Feeding challenges, such as trouble sucking or swallowing
  • A weak or altered cry
  • Loss of muscle tone or head control
  • Decreased facial expression

If you suspect your child may have infant botulism, medical providers are instructed to contact the Infant Botulism Treatment and Prevention Program immediately. Without professional medical intervention, the illness can lead to dangerous outcomes, including progressive paralysis and respiratory failure.

Sanitization Steps

To ensure the safety of your home, all items or surfaces that came into contact with the recalled formula powder must be cleaned thoroughly. Officials advise washing these surfaces with hot, soapy water or running items through a dishwasher.
