Ex-NFL reporter wins GOP Senate primary in Minnesota

Former NFL sideline reporter Michele Tafoya has officially secured the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in Minnesota. Following a decisive victory in Tuesday’s primary, Tafoya is moving on to the general election as she looks to shift the political landscape in the state.

A Decisive Primary Victory

Tafoya dominated the field, capturing 52.1% of the vote according to NBC News. She comfortably outperformed her primary opponents, including Adam Schwarze, who finished with 24%, and former NBA player Royce White, who secured 11.2%. Tom Weiler and Joyce Lacey trailed with 6% and 1.8%, respectively.

Looking Toward November

With the primary behind her, Tafoya is set to face Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, the winner of the Democratic primary. The two candidates are vying to fill the seat being vacated by retiring Democratic Senator Tina Smith, who has served since 2018. The upcoming race represents a significant challenge for the GOP, as Minnesota has not elected a Republican to the U.S. Senate since Norm Coleman in 2002, and the state has not seen a Republican win a statewide election since 2006.

Tafoya took to social media following her win to express her gratitude and vision. In a post to X on Tuesday night, she stated, “Tonight’s results show Minnesotans are ready for a new direction. Together, we will bring common sense back to Washington, fight fraud, hold those responsible accountable, and win in November.”

From the Sidelines to the Senate

Before entering the political arena, Tafoya enjoyed a celebrated career in sports broadcasting. A four-time Emmy Award winner, she spent years on the sidelines for ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” and NBC’s “Sunday Night Football.” During her tenure, she covered 327 NFL games, concluding her broadcasting career at Super Bowl LVI on Feb. 13, 2022. She officially launched her campaign for the open Senate seat this past January.
