Former NFL player leaves Deion Sanders’ staff weeks before start of season
Colorado receivers coach Jason Phillips, who played in the NFL for the Falcons and Lions, is no longer on staff under Deion Sanders.

With the football season rapidly approaching, Deion Sanders is facing a late shakeup on his Colorado staff. Wide receivers coach Jason Phillips is no longer with the Buffaloes, a move that Sanders confirmed on Monday night.
A Veteran Exit
While initial reports from 247Sports suggested the departure was to address a family matter, Sanders clarified that Phillips has officially opted to retire from the coaching profession.
Expressing deep respect for his longtime colleague, Sanders wrote on X: “Coach Jason Phillips is my brother, my dawg & my dear friend. He was even mentioned in my HOF speech because of how he helped me prepare for games with ATL. He’s retiring after a stellar career & please note several Buffs recs are in NFL camps currently. Love ya man 2 Life!”
A Storied Career
Phillips’ connection with Sanders spans several years; he joined the Colorado staff ahead of the 2024 season after previously serving under Sanders at Jackson State in 2021.
Before stepping into the coaching ranks, Phillips put together a notable football resume. Following his collegiate career at the University of Houston, he was selected by the Detroit Lions in the 10th round of the 1989 NFL Draft. He also enjoyed a stint with the Atlanta Falcons.
Over the course of 58 NFL games, Phillips hauled in 49 receptions for 578 yards and two touchdowns, with his most productive outing coming during his rookie campaign where he tallied 30 catches for 352 yards.
