Legendary Mobile high school coach joins Senior Bowl team

The Senior Bowl is bringing a local coaching legend into the fold. As announced this Wednesday, legendary high school coach Terry Curtis has been appointed as the executive director of the Mobile Baldwin Athletic Partnership (MBAP).

A Legacy of Leadership

Curtis, who stepped away from the sidelines following the 2024 season, is set to transition his decades of experience into a new role focused on supporting the next generation. According to Senior Bowl officials, his primary goal will be to expand the reach of the MBAP by mentoring local student-athletes and strengthening the bond between local athletics and the Senior Bowl. The non-profit operates under Senior Bowl Charities, providing critical resources, equipment, and mentorship to public school athletic programs throughout the area.

Community Impact

Scott Cooper, Chairman of the Mobile Arts & Sports Association, emphasized that the appointment is about more than just football. "The Mobile Baldwin Athletic Partnership represents far more than financial support for local football programs," Cooper stated. "It is an investment in the future leaders of our community. There is no one more qualified to lead this mission than Coach Terry Curtis. His impact on high school football is unmatched, but even more impressive is the influence he has had on generations of young people throughout our area."

An Unrivaled Career

Curtis leaves behind a massive footprint in high school sports after a career spanning 52 years. During his tenure, which included head coaching stints at UMS-Wright, Murphy, B.C. Rain, and Shaw, he amassed 361 wins and eight state championships—both figures ranking second in Alabama state history.

His career accomplishments have been widely recognized, including induction into the Alabama High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. Furthermore, the National Federation of High School Coaches honored him as the National Coach of the Year for the 2018-19 season.

A Full-Circle Moment

For Curtis, the new role feels like a natural extension of his lifelong commitment to the game and his community. "I have attended the Senior Bowl for as long as I can remember," Curtis said. "Some of my earliest memories are of coming to the game with my family, no matter what the weather was like or what we had going on. Coaching and mentoring young people has been my life’s work for more than 50 years, and I still have the same passion for it today."

He added, "Being able to continue serving student-athletes and coaches in our community through the Senior Bowl makes this a full-circle moment for me, and I am eager to get started."
